Most patients with coronavirus 2019 infection have an asymptomatic or mild course. They present with fever, cough and difficulty breathing and improve. Other patients develop worsening symptoms with respiratory failure and require hospitalization. Some patients may require management in the intensive care unit and artificial ventilation. These sicker patients are at an increased risk of dying. This article is about the risk factors, presentation, management and complications of prolonged hospitalization for patients with severe COVID-19 infection.
